Poet Simon Armitage discusses his new book of poems and photographs, Still, with Alan Wakefield and Nigel Steel, two of IWM’s leading First World War historians. The conversation, chaired by Martha Kearney from BBC Radio’s World at One, takes an in-depth look at the project and how Armitage came to pair haunting aerial and reconnaissance photographs from the IWM collection with new poems that draw from Virgil’s Georgics. They discuss why WW1 is such a defining moment; the catastrophic, industrial scale of the war; the role of photography, film and poetry in the war; and why we’re still coming to terms with the war’s significance.
