Take part in LIGHTS OUT

29 July 2014

Everyone is invited join in one of the most dramatic UK-wide events ever organised, a shared moment of reflection that marks the centenary of the outbreak of war in the UK.

You can take part in whatever way you choose, either by going out to experience LIGHTS OUT in your local area; search the directory of over 650 events taking place throughout the UK. Or stay in and simply turn off your lights from 10pm to 11pm on Monday 4 August, leaving on a single light or candle. Whatever you choose to do, take a photo and tag it #LightsOut

The inspiration for LIGHTS OUT comes from a famous remark made on the eve of the outbreak of war by the then Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”. Britain declared war on Germany at 11pm on 4 August 1914 ushering in one of the darkest periods in our history.
