Dedicated to Gunner William 'Billy' Mitchell
by Sheila Haigh Nee Mitchell
My Grandad Billy Mitchell (second left, on one knee), was a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, saw action in the Somme and was mentioned in dispatches.
Thankfully, he came home (via Special Railway Ticket issued at Heaton Park Dispersal Station) to Radcliffe – and to his sweetheart and later wife, Eveline (my Grandma).
This square is dedicated to him, his unknown friends in the photo and the countless unlucky ones who didn’t get to receive their ticket home.
Lest we forget.
