Fifty-five Macclesfield men are known to have lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme, four of them on the first day, and many more casualties came from surrounding villages. At home, families suffered unimaginable anguish when told their loved ones were ‘missing’, having to wait up to a year for news before eventually being told that their husband or son was presumed to have died, and no-one knew his final resting place.
The Macclesfield and District Great War Centenary Committee is organising events and publishing information under the banner of ‘Macclesfield Reflects…’ to commemorate the centenary of the conflict. Project members are researching the stories of those who lived or died during the Great War, and publishing those stories in books and on the website to ensure they are not forgotten.
