All of my great grandparents’ sons served in the First World War with the Army Service Corps. We know very little about their experiences of the war; one story we know is my grandfather coming home from the front and having to burn his uniform at the end of the garden due to lice infestation.
During one artillery barrage, my grandfather’s horse was hit by shrapnel and he then stitched the wound using the needle and thread from his ‘hussif’.
I am thankful that all the brothers returned safely from the conflict. What experiences they, their horses and their mates endured we will never know – I want to remember their sacrifice for now and forever.
