Michael was my great great uncle, he joined the 16th bn highland light infrantry in 1915, and was sent to France in that same year. He served with the 32 division, during the battle of the Somme, and was killed in action that first horrific day. He was 21. That first day the battalion lost 553 men. “They were simply mown down by machine gun fire”. War diary of the 16th bn HLI
Lest we forget.
The picture is of Michael and his brother my great grandfather William Patrick Ryan who served in the merchant navy during the war.
