Co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW and Public Art Fund and supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Flow Separation pays homage to the artists and dazzle technology behind the camouflaged ships that crossed the Atlantic during the First World War.

Auerbach has ‘dazzled’ the historic New York fireboat John J. Harvey into a floating artwork. Treating this decorative art as a visualization of the physics of “fluid dynamics,” Auerbach’s dazzle incorporates the movement and behaviour of water into its design.

The dazzled boat, with optically vibrating designs, will be docked at various locations around the New York Harbour and from 1 July it will make free trips along New York’s waterways for passengers on weekends throughout the summer and early autumn.

Flow Separation opens to the public this Sunday 1 July.
