On 20 July 2017, Jeremy Deller publishes a new artist’s book about We’re here because we’re here. The book includes over 100 colour photographs, sketches from Deller’s notebook, and details about how the event was created and implemented on such a huge scale.
We’re here because we’re here marked the centenary of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 2016. Thousands of participants dressed in First World War uniform appeared without explanation in locations across the UK, each representing a soldier who had died on the first day of the Somme 100 years before.
An exhibition about the project is on tour until 14 April 2018, currently at the National Theatre in London.
