Art on the Underground

When You Look You May Not See, Richard Wentworth, 2014.

Last week posters of Richard Wentworth’s When You Look You May Not See went up across the London underground network.

The work features the text of a postcard written by a soldier to his wife in 1918, one week before the Armistice was signed. Making use of the original Johnston font designed by Edward Johnston, for information posters across the network still in use today, Wentworth’s piece explores the space of the Tube as one of both mass, public communication on one hand, and a private and individual experience on the other.
