Linn Phipps

Great-niece

Did you die in the mud, soldier?
Or did you die on the wire?
Did you die from a shell, soldier?
Or was it a sniper’s fire?

Was it a blinding flash, soldier?
And did you know you would die?
Did you have time to think, soldier?
Did you think about us who’d cry?

A 100 years have passed, soldier,
A war of fearful fame.
Never lost from our hearts, soldier,
Soldier of unknown name.
