Dear son,

How are you? We hear there are of breakthrough’s at Ypres and Passchendaele. Is this true? I hope so. Your mother and I are worried sick. You are so brave to have put yourself forward to fight. Everyone is so proud of you. You are serving your country and you will have eternal respect for that. I have a few questions to ask. Whats it like out there? Is it like the papers say? The authorities say that millions have died already but 1 last push is next week. Please. Be safe. Don’t try and show off for Jim or Harry. Oh, how are they? I really hopes you are ok and are enjoying yourself as much as it is a savage war.

Don’t forget to clean that bayonet of yours.

Love,

Dad

P.S Shoot straight
