End of Empire

“I now think that art helps students think about history. It makes them think in a different way. I think it allows them to question more and explore ideas than when presented with text/ facts”
History Teacher, Margate
Through an ambitious learning programme, 14-18 NOW supported Turner Contemporary, Margate, to recruit a historian to join the Learning team. The aim was to create a new schools and young people’s programme where arts and heritage would meet in response to End of Empire, Yinka Shonibare, MBE.
This unique approach presented an exciting opportunity which enabled the gallery to see how contemporary art can shine a light on historical events and amplify the Hands on Philosophy methodology the team uses to drive their learning and visitor engagement.
The gallery hosted a series of workshops enabling new audiences to engage with the exhibition. Young people worked with a specialist digital team to record their responses to the artwork. These films can be viewed below.
