Exclusive talk: Meet the creatives behind ‘we’re here because we’re here’

On Friday 1 July 2016, 1400 volunteers took part in a modern memorial to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

we’re here because we’re here’ – a UK-wide event conceived and created by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller and Director of the National Theatre, Rufus Norris – saw groups of voluntary participants dressed in First World War uniform appear unexpectedly in locations across the UK. Each participant represented an individual soldier who was killed on that day one hundred years before.

Discussing this unique event on Monday 11 July at the National Theatre, Jeremy Deller, Rufus Norris, Director of 14-18 NOW, Jenny Waldman and Senior Associate Director, Emily Lim explored its conception, journey and delivery with Lyse Doucet, Chief International Correspondent for the BBC.
